Syria crisis: Where do the major countries stand?

Attention has been galvanised by the refugee crisis in Europe, continuing alarm over Islamic State, and Russias deployment of combat aircraft to Syria and its seizure of the initiative to take advantage of US and western disarray.

The US, UK and others have subtly shifted positions or sent out mixed messages. Iran and Saudi Arabia, like Russia, are holding firm.

It remains hard to see a route out of the bloodshed and deadlock.

See where the countries stand at:

Obamas Surreal U.N. Speech
National Review Online, by Elliott Abrams - Thanks, Dave

Obamas U.N. speech is filled with nice lines that unfortunately bear no relationship to his seven years of foreign policy and in some cases, no relationship to reality.

Bombshell or Gimmick?

Nor do they believe Abbas' speech will have much impact at a time when the Middle East peace process is far down the international community's agenda.

The Affordable Housing Fraud
Creators Syndicate, by Thomas Sowell - Thanks, Dave

Liberals never understand that housing becomes unaffordable when government restricts supply.

Or?  Maybe they do understand and just want to keep the minorities out?

A recent survey showed that the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Frisco was just over $3,500. Some people are paying $1,800 a month just to rent bunk beds.

Housing prices in San Francisco, and in many other communities for miles around, were once no higher than in the rest of the United States. But, beginning in the 1970s, housing prices in these communities skyrocketed to three or four times the national average.

Why? Because local government laws and policies severely restricted, or banned outright, the building of anything on vast areas of land. This is called preserving open space, and open space has become almost a cult obsession among self-righteous environmental activists, many of whom are sufficiently affluent that they dont have to worry about housing prices.

Flat Tire
Thanks, George

Yesterday, I had a flat tire on Trans Canada Highway.  So I eased my car over to the shoulder of the road, carefully got out of the car and opened the trunk.

I took out 2 cardboard men, unfolded them and stood them at the rear of my car facing oncoming traffic.

They looked so life like you wouldn't believe it!  They were in trench coats exposing their nude bodies to the approaching drivers.

To my surprise, cars started slowing down looking at my lifelike men which made it safer for me to work at the side of the road.  And of course, traffic started backing up.   Everybody was tooting their horns and waving like crazy.

It wasn't long before a police officer pulled up behind me.  He got out of his car and started walking toward me.  I could tell he was not a happy camper!

What's going on here?

My car has a flat tire, I said calmly.

Well, he asked, what are those obscene cardboard men doing here by the road?

I couldn't believe that he didn't know - so I told him, Hellooo!  Those are my emergency flashers!

CURTAIN RODS
Thanks, Marty

On the first day, he sadly packed his belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases.

On the second day, he had the movers come and collect his things.

On the third day, he sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining-room table, by candle-light; he put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of spring-water.

When he'd finished, he went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimps dipped in caviar into the hollow center of the curtain rods.

He then cleaned up the kitchen and left.

On the fourth day, the wife came back with her new boyfriend, and at first all was bliss.

Then, slowly, the house began to smell.

They tried everything; cleaning, mopping, and airing-out the place.

Vents were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam cleaned.

Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which time the two had to move out for a few days, and in the end they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting. Nothing worked!  People stopped coming over to visit.

Repairmen refused to work in the house.  The maid quit.

Finally, they couldn't take the stench any longer, and decided they had to move, but a month later - even though they'd cut their price in half - they couldn't find a buyer for such a stinky house.

Word got out, and eventually even the local realtors refused to return their calls.

Finally, unable to wait any longer for a purchaser, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place.

Then the EX called the woman and asked how things were going. She told him the saga of the rotting house. He listened politely and said he missed his old home terribly and would be willing to reduce his divorce settlement in exchange for having the house.

Knowing he could have no idea how bad the smell really was, she agreed on a price only 1/10 nth of what the house had been worth... but only if he would sign the papers that very day.

He agreed, and within two hours her lawyers delivered the completed paperwork.

A week later the woman and her boyfriend stood smiling as they watched the men from the moving company pack everything to take to their new home…

and to spite the ex-husband, they even took the curtain rods!

I LOVE A HAPPY ENDING, DON'T YOU

Now here was a President! Wish we had him back!
Thanks, Robert
