You Live in Alabama. Here’s How You’re Going to Die. A look at the most common causes of death by state...

.

Ttwo months ago, I wrote about the fun and the pitfalls of viral maps, a feature that included 88 simple maps of my own creation. Since then I’ve written up a bunch of short items on some of those maps, walking through how they can both illustrate great information and hide important details. At one point, I said I was done with these. Well, I wasn’t. Here’s another, on death. Enjoy!

The data used to create the table below are from a 2008 CDC report that’s based on numbers from 2005. Ideally, we’d have more up-to-date information, but their page on mortality tables indicates that there’s nothing more recent on state-by-state causes of death.

Blatt_Death_1

Data source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Map by Ben Blatt/Slate.

The map above, included in the original interactive, showed the most common causes of death excluding heart disease and cancer. The reason for the exclusions was to create more geographic variation. Heart disease and cancer, the top two leading causes of deaths in every state, account for more deaths than the next eight causes of death combined

Blatt_Death_2

Data source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Map by Ben Blatt/Slate.

In these first two maps, we still only see five causes of death: heart disease, cancer, stroke, accidents, and respiratory diseases. Inspired by an unrelated map on regionalism in music preferences, I created a map in the original interactive that showed which cause (in the national top 10) affected each state at a rate most disproportionate to what one would expect based on the national rates. (I measured this using a ratio of state level rate to national rate, also known as the location quotient.)

The 10 causes as classified by the CDC are “diseases of heart” (heart disease), “malignant neoplasms” (cancer), “chronic lower respiratory diseases” (respiratory diseases), “cerebrovascular diseases” (stroke), “accidents,” “Alzheimer’s disease,” “diabetes mellitus” (diabetes), “influenza and pneumonia,” “nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis” (kidney diseases), and “septicemia.”

Blatt_Death_3

Data source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Map by Ben Blatt/Slate.

I included this map because it illustrates a few things the other two don’t, mainly the regionalism in diseases like septicemia and kidney diseases. But this map—like many maps which purport to show attributes meant to be “distinct” or “disproportionate”—can be misleading if not read properly. For one thing, you cannot make comparisons between states. Looking at this map, you probably would not guess that Utah has the sixth-highest diabetes rate in the country. Diabetes just happens to be the one disease that affects Utah most disproportionately. Louisiana has a higher diabetes death rate than any state, but is affected even more disproportionately by kidney disease.

If you’re interested in geographic variation of cause of death, I’d recommended looking through the data (either on the CDC site or easily organized on this site). But I also realize data tables are not as fun as maps, so below is an attempt to break down the numbers in a more granular but still visual manner. For instance, take this map that shows which states have more people die from accidents than the national average.

Blatt_Death_4

Data source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Map by Ben Blatt/Slate.

It should be noted that each state’s rate is compared with the national average, not the median. That’s why it’s possible for 30 states to have more deaths than the national average.

Blatt_Death_5

Data source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Map by Ben Blatt/Slate.

It should also be clear that this data is not normalized by state. This means a cause of death may be uncommon for its own state, but still higher than the national average. For instance, a person from Alabama dies from every single one of the nation’s top 10 causes of death at an age-adjusted rate that exceeds the national average.

By contrast, the age-adjusted death rates for the top 10 causes of death are all lower in Minnesota than they are nationally. It makes sense, then, that the most recent estimatesby the CDC have the life expectancy in Minnesota as nearly five years longer than in Alabama.

Below are maps for the other top eight causes of death. Accidents are the fourth-leading cause and heart disease is the first. The rest are presented in sequential order.

OBAMA BROKE THE LAW AND USED BOWE BERGDAHL AS AN EXCUSE -- WHAT MAY BE GOING ON BEHIND THE SCENES?

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 05:48 PM PDT

obama_smoking

Why would President Obama seemingly break two laws?

One, a rather minor law involving the prior notification to Congress of any proposed release of enemy combatants from the United States detention facility located in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. And two, a criminal act of giving aid and comfort to an enemy of the United States in a time of war; an offense that rises to the status of an impeachable high crime and misdemeanor.

It  should be noted that President Obama has claimed that the legislation requiring congressional notification was unconstitutional and an impingement on his presidential powers -- although he signed an unconstitutional act into law. As for the signing statement issued after the law became effective, the signing statement is not law and cannot authorize the breaking of a law.

Here is my theory …

President Obama, in pursuit of his legacy of quitting Afghanistan, needed to negotiate directly and/or indirectly with the Taliban on behalf of the United States and Hamid Karzai’s Afghan state.

Possibly for two or more reasons.

One, to allow an orderly withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan with little or no ambushes or fighting.

Two, to prevent Afghan from immediately devolving into chaos under the control of tribal warlords before the 2016 presidential election.

Three, to insure that the United States would be able to keep some troops in Afghanistan, primarily for damage control, to protect Hamid Karzai whose natural intention would be to bolt with billions of taxpayer dollars when the military withdraws, and to prevent Afghanistan and the Pakistani ISI from combining forces to the disadvantage of the United States and India.

Four, to remove Bergdahl as a bargaining chip during U.S. negotiations and to deny Karzai the chance to exploit Bergdahl for his own purposes.

And  five, to remove the five most dangerous enemy combatants in Gitmo to downplay the relative dangerousness of the remaining detainees – setting the stage for closing of the Guantanamo facility. Whether or not Obama would actually abandon the base to Cuba is unknown – but then again, President Obama is not your traditional patriotic American President.

Unfortunately for President Obama, the Taliban may have demanded the return of the five high-ranking Taliban officials as a precursor to talks and any further diplomatic action. Something that would require the approval of Congress to legitimize the transaction since it is clearly beyond the President’s unilateral power to release high-ranking enemy combatants who pose a risk to American lives.

So, President Obama and his cadre of progressive socialist democrats decided to, once again, bypass Congress, and use Bowe Bergdahl’s health as an exigent circumstance that justified Obama’s unilateral action to release the five dangerous enemy combatants from Gitmo.

Yes, President Obama and his cadre of progressive socialist democrats knew that Bergdahl had deserted his post and possibly was a traitor—giving aid and comfort to the enemy in a time of war. But, being King Obama and having the protection of the mainstream media, Obama probably believed that he could manage any negative media and the issue of Bergdahl’s service would fade away over time.

It is amusing that Obama cited exigent circumstances involving Bergdahl's health although he entered the special forces helicopter unassisted and immediately communicated with the troops.

Bottom line …

I would not put it past President Obama and Valerie Jarrett to stage-manage the optics of the final withdrawal by insuring no American soldier was left in captivity. But what about otherAmerican civilians who may still be in captivity such as Caitlin Coleman, an American citizen who, along with her Canadian-born husband Josh, disappeared in Afghanistan in October 2012 and Warren Weinstein, 72, a government contractor who was doing work in Pakistan when he was kidnapped in August 2011? I would suggest that their lives are as valuable as a potential deserter/collaborator.

Once again, President Obama and his cadre of progressive socialist democrats have proved that they cannot be trusted to keep America and Americans safe and secure. And, that the progressive socialist democrats act as a fifth column to destroy America from within. Ergo, the progressive socialist democrats represent a clear and present danger and must be removed from the House and Senate, along with their RINO (Republican In Name Only) cohorts that are selling out America to its enemies, both foreign and domestic and destroying America’s infrastructure and prosperity in order to bring about a socialist state.

Remember this when you vote. As for my theory, only time will tell.

A FEMA CAMP FOR CHILDREN IS COMING TO PORT HUENEME, CALIFORNIA COURTESY OF OBAMAS UNILATERAL AMNESTY

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 10:31 PM PDT

President and his cadre of progressive socialist democrats have created a humanitarian crisis by incentivizing illegal aliens to send their children into the country to obtain amnesty … splitting up families and encouraging child rape of girls in transit.

Unbelievable, FEMA is building a humanitarian detention center nearby in Oxnard, California. Built on the Port Hueneme Naval Base, the home of the Naval Construction Battalion known as the Seabees, the center will house children who have entered the country illegally.

seabees

The US Navy Port Hueneme Construction Battalion Center plays a central role in the daily life of Port Hueneme. Located adjacent to Port Hueneme Harbor, this naval base employs over 2,600 active duty personnel on 1600 acres. It is known as the west coast "Home of the Pacific Seabees." It has been in use since May 18, 1942 and is controlled by the United States Navy.

According to published reports, the flow across our border could reach up to 60,000 children this coming year and 130,000 by 2015 -- a cost to the United States taxpayer north of $2.BILLION. The same reports claim that the children stay 30 – 45 days and are provided with medical, education, and other forms of assistance before they are placed with a sponsor or allowed to leave with a relative.

All because President Obama wanted a political win with the illegal alien activist lobby and those who get out the progressive socialist democrat vote in heavily immigrant neighborhoods.

Due to the proliferation of false documents, it is unknown how many illegals actually vote in any given election and the extend to which they can affect election outcomes. It is well-known that the House of Representatives found that the number of illegal aliens voting in Loretta Sanchez’s district probably cost Robert Dornan the election. A congressional investigation found at least 748 votes against a winning margin of 984 votes – and Newt Gingrich, acting as the Speaker of the House refused to take further action to prolong the inquiry and deny her a seat in Congress. Another “historic first” as Sanchez was the first Mexican-American Representative from a conservative, but changing, Orange County (California).

Bottom line ..

President Barack Obama is a clear and present danger to our nation. Not only is he encouraging breaking the law, splitting families, and child rape, he is unnecessarily costing the taxpayer billions of dollars in order to purchase political support from those who support open borders and unrestricted migration. Whereas an American caught illegally in Mexico is jailed or worse, the United States is opening the floodgates to fraud.

When we say children, we are talking of individuals up to about 17-1/2 years old – and that includes some of the most violent gangbangers from Mexico, El Salvador, and other countries.

We must remove progressive socialist democrats from office before we no longer recognize American and are no longer Americans.

I could not help but laugh at the way the progressive socialist democrats are telling their coalition of victims that our nation, and them in particular, is suffering because of “massive inequality” … [my comments in blue italic]

5 Ways Massive Inequality Is Paralyzing American Society

The severing of our society into a plutocracy and a peasantry is so far along that statistics almost cease to have meaning. But the facts have to be told, to help explain the sickening sense that we're becoming a nation without a middle class, paralyzed by the inequality deniers  and excuse makers who refuse to admit there's something wrong with their free-market capitalist systemThe extremes are becoming almost intolerable.

[First, we must comment on the rhetoric of the progressive socialist democrats; where anyone who does not agree with their deeply flawed or erroneous assumptions and conclusions is labeled a “denier” – a pejorative that originated with the term “holocaust denier.”  Then there are the attacks on our capitalist political system that provides equality of opportunity as opposed to the socialist/communist ideal of equality of outcome as guaranteed by a strong, some say totalitarian, centrally-planned government. And, what would a progressive socialist democrat diatribe be without claiming any position other than their own is “extreme?”]

1. A Broken System of Compensation: The Combined Salaries of 350,000 Pre-School Teachers is Less Than That of Five Hedge Fund Managers
Pre-school teaching may be our nation's most important jobNumerous studies show that with pre-school, all children achieve more and earn more through adulthood, with the most disadvantaged benefiting the most. Hedge fund managers, at the other extreme, are likely to bet on mortgages to fail or on food prices to rise. It's a frightening commentary on our value system that the total income of over a third of a million pre-school teachers is less than the combined income of just five big-money speculators.

[Reality is hard to understand if you are a progressive socialist democrat.

First, Pre-school is not our nation’s most important job. Teachers, in general, are doing a poor job of educating our children, turning out decades of functional illiterate that can’t seem to compete with the person across town, let alone in a global economy.

Second, there is no statistically valid proof that show that any pre-school advantages dissipate after the second grade and do not correlate well to future success as a student or as a citizen.

Does Prekindergarten Improve School Preparation and Performance?

Using a new rich source of data, researchers Katherine Magnuson, Christopher Ruhm, and Jane Waldfogel conclude in Does Prekindergarten Improve School Preparation and Performance? (NBER Working Paper No. 10452) that early education does increase reading and mathematics skills at school entry, but it also boosts children's classroom behavioral problems and reduces their self-control. Further, for most children the positive effects of pre-kindergarten on skills largely dissipate by the spring of first grade, although the negative behavioral effects continue. In the study, the authors take account of many factors affecting a child, including family background and neighborhood characteristics. These factors include race/ethnicity, age, health status at birth, height, weight, and gender, family income related to need, language spoken in the home, and so on.  Source: Does Prekindergarten Improve School Preparation and Performance?

Third, there is little or no correlation between the pay of teachers and the results they are producing. Why teachers should receive a life-long pass to insulate them from economic realities that are found in the private sector when they perform so poorly is a result of the progressive unions who introduce corruption into the political process and continue to poison our children’s minds against American exceptionalism and capitalism. To compare the pay of teachers to hedge fund managers is intellectually dishonest in many respects; the least of which of is the progressive socialist democrats use of “class envy” to drive their entitlement agenda that trades votes for government handouts.

And, Fourth, pre-school is actually being promoted by the unions to enlarge their declining membership in the private sector and is being sold to the progressive victimhood as free government-subsidized daycare for working mothers and fathers]

2. Diminishing Support for Society: The 1% Made More from their Investments in 2013 than the Entire Cost of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Safety Net

America's wealth grew by almost $9 trillion  in 2013. The richest 1% own 34 percent of the wealth, or about $3 trillion of the 2013 gain. That is far more than the budget for Social Security ($860 billion), Medicare ($524 billion), Medicaid ($304 billion), and the entire safety net ($286 billion for SNAP, WIC [Women, Infants, Children], Child Nutrition, Earned Income Tax Credit, Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and Housing).

[Again, the progressive socialists democrats are promoting class envy and suggesting that the working class have a right to the wealth of those who have inherited or earned their wealth. In essence promoting the socialist/communist denial of private property rights and that all productive assets should be owned by the people and managed by the enlightened elite using central planning by the government and enforced by a totalitarian regime to insure “fairness.” All the while overlooking the demonstrable fact that the enlightened ruling elite and their special interest friends are unbelievably corrupt and living high on the hog. If you do not believe that a 1% exists in a socialist/communist society, just check out the massive wealth of the political leaders.]

3. Capital's Long-Term Dominance of Labor: Since 1900, a Dollar of Labor has Grown to $127, a Dollar of Stocks to $1,247

There's a good reason why the super-rich are cleaning up in the stock market. Thomas Piketty explains that, barring war or depression, the return on capital far outpaces economic growth, causing average workers without a stock portfolio to drop further and further behind. A look at stock market growth over 114 years confirms that a dollar of capital is now worth ten times more than a dollar of labor value. In recent years, the gains from continued worker productivity have gone to the 10% of Americans who own almost 90 percent of all stocks excluding pensions (which are fast disappearing).

[It should be noted that Thomas Piketty is a French socialist economist whose book on inequality appears to be riddled with errors and other issues.

Piketty findings undercut by errors

Thomas Piketty’s book, ‘Capital in the Twenty-First Century’, has been the publishing sensation of the year. Its thesis of rising inequality tapped into the zeitgeist and electrified the post-financial crisis public policy debate.

Some issues concern sourcing and definitional problems. Some numbers appear simply to be constructed out of thin air. But according to a Financial Times investigation, the rock-star French economist appears to have got his sums wrong.

The data underpinning Professor Piketty’s 577-page tome, which has dominated best-seller lists in recent weeks, contain a series of errors that skew his findings. The FT found mistakes and unexplained entries in his spreadsheets, similar to those that last year undermined the work on public debt and growth of Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff.  Source: Piketty findings undercut by errors - FT.com

What the progressive socialist democrats do not seem to mention is that progressive socialist unions are undermining our economy and society with their political corruption and cronyism. It appears that these progressive unions reward seniority over merit, the status quo over innovation, the use of work rules that demand single tasks be performed by multiple union people, and worst of all, demand continuing hikes in salaries, benefits, and pensions without any corresponding increase in productivity to pay for the increases. The pricing of union labor has done more to drive outsourcing than any other single factor in America other than rising taxes, and increasingly ideologically-motivated administrative and directed rules and regulations. And, truth-be-told, these very same unions place their money in the stock market and bet against the very companies that they are plundering. So spare me the socialist/communist class rhetoric that does nothing by create chaos and lead to political revolutions.]

4. The Walmartization of America: A Few Super-Rich at the Top, then Everyone Else

Just like at Walmart, a few big moneymakers are ruling over a great majority of increasingly low-income workers. Low-wage jobs ($7.69 to $13.83 per hour) made up 1/5 of the jobs lost to the recession, but accounted for nearly 3/5 of the jobs regained during the recovery. And it's getting worse. Nine out of ten of the fastest-growing occupations are considered low-wage, generally not requiring a college degree.

The descent into Walmart-like employment is disproportionately hurting minorities. In 2013, an astonishing 55.9 percent of employed black recent college graduates were underemployed, working in an occupation that typically does not require a four-year college degree. At the other end of the Walmartization, families in the top 5% made anywhere from $300,000 to $40 million -- in just one year.

[The problem with Walmart is that they refuse to give up to the progressive socialist democrat unions as that would reduce their operational effectiveness and drastically increase prices with no offsets – the costs to be carried on the backs of consumers – with especially heavy impacts on the poor and middle class. As for minorities, it should be noted that the progressive socialist democrats have continued to keep minorities as a permanent underclass in order to perpetuate their political power. When these minorities succeed, especially those who are immigrants, they regard progressive wealth distribution and increased taxation as confiscatory and tend to leave the progressive socialist democrat party. How many times have we seen minority activists protest against the big box stores on behalf of their masters – the progressive socialist democrat trade unions? Disadvantaging their community and providing additional tax revenue and jobs in the next community where the big box store locates.

Yes, the Waltons are wealthy – the found a need and filled it. It is the American way. Now the progressive socialist democrats come along and claim that they are not paying their “fair share” which is calculated to be the amount of money to return them to the middle class.]

5. Toward Third-World Status: Our Shrinking Middle Class Gets a Smaller Cut of National Wealth than Anywhere except China and India

From a global perspective, we're becoming the type of country that we used to dismiss as "third-world." Among developed and fast-rising nations only the middle classes of China and India  get a smaller cut of their country's wealth than in the United States. Both of them are rapidly catching up to us.

[What? Shrinking our economy, disarming our military, reducing our population and standard of living is the goal of the progressive socialist democrats. Where have you been? This is the mantra of all of the progressive socialist/communist environmentalists who tell us we must downsize to save the planet. We must curb our pollution – even as Russia, China, and India up the number of coal-fired energy generating plants. This is pure madness designed to defeat the United States from within and ensure we become another unexceptional member state of the international community that is dominated by socialists, communists, and Islamicists.]

Antidote

Thomas Piketty recommends a global wealth tax to help reverse inequality. But a financial transaction tax (also called speculation tax or Robin Hood tax) would be easier to implement, more efficiently regulated, and a source of massive revenues at little cost to financial traders.  Whatever method we choose, progressive thinkers in the U.S. and around the world will need to unite on a single cause, much as the Tea Party did in its crusade against government. We can't afford to disagree among ourselves as paralysis sets in.

[Piketty is a freaking socialist – the man who supports spending the public taxpayer’s money until it is all gone and there is yet another revolution to recapture natural resources, property, and redistribute wealth once again. There is but one antidote for what is occurring in America; reducing political corruption and cronyism – starting with the elimination of progressive socialist democrats and their progressive trade unions.]

Source (in context and with reference footnotes): 5 Ways Massive Inequality Is Paralyzing American Society

Bottom line …

The progressive socialist democrats and their RINO (Republican In Name Only) are a clear and present danger to America and constitute a fifth column seeking to destroy America from within. We need to eliminate the political corruption and cronyism that is currently found in politics. The most significant method of fixing our nation’s finances is to eliminate the progressive socialist democrat trade and public employee unions, reduce taxes, eliminate many of the redundant and/or nonsensical administrative rules and regulations and shrink the size and scope of government.

If you cannot see this, vote for one of the most corrupt politicians in the history of the United States; one that raised cronyism to a fine art; and one that has no problem lying to the American public. Yes, folks --  vote for Hillary Clinton. Or just stick a dagger in the heart of America.

To my Veteran Friends, their Families, and Everyone Else...

All Veterans (or families of Vets)

It doesn't matter if you are a veteran or not.  Please read and forward this to all your e-mail buddies.  It needs to go viral.  If you are not a veteran send this to those that you know who are, or to those who may know veterans.

The 2014 United States elections will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. During this midtermelection year, all 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives and 33 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate will be contested in this election. Get out and VOTE!!!!

A movement has been started by our armed forces to get out the vote in 2014.. They are organizing themselves, but this can be done by all of us. The President, the Commander in Chief, has made the Rules of Engagement (ROE) so difficult, that our troops are often killed before they can even get permission to fight. Nothing has been done to stop our troops from being murdered by the Afghanis they are training, either.

Now, the President wants the US to sign on to the UNs International Criminal Court (ICC), which would allow the UN's ICC to arrest and try US troops for War Crimes, without the legal protections guaranteed under US Law, and from which there is no appeal. The President, with his Democratic control of the Senate, has nearly all the power. If the Non-Establishment Republicans, and Conservatives, can take back the Senate in 2014, our troops can once again be protected from unnecessary danger. Please consider this, and send it on to your mailing lists.

Interestingly enough, when GWB was president you heard about the military deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan almost daily. With Obama in the White House, the mainstream media has been strangely quiet. ---

More than 1,000 American soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan in the last 27 months. This is more than the combined total of the nine years before. Thirty have died in August. During the last month, over 50 additional NATO and US servicemen have been murdered, inside jobs by those who are hired to be a force for good in Afghanistan.

The commander in chief is AWOL. Not a peep, although he ordered the White House flag flown at half-staff for the Sikhs that were killed. There is a deep disgust, a fury, growing in the ranks of the military against the indifferent incompetence of this president.

It has taken on a dangerous tone. No one knows what to do about him, but the anger runs deep as the deaths continue with no strategic end in sight to the idiocy of this war. Obama has had 4 years to end this futile insanity, during which time he has vacationed, golfed, campaigned, and generally ignored the plight of our men and women in uniform. But, there is now a movement afoot in the armed services to launch a massive get out the vote drive against this president.

Not just current active duty types, but the National Guard, Reserves, the retired, and all other prior service members. This is no small special interest group, but many millions of veterans who can have an enormous impact on the outcome of the November election if they all respond.

The one million military retirees in Florida alone could mean an overwhelming victory in that state if they all show up at the polls. It might not keep another one hundred U.S. troops from dying between now and November, but a turn out to vote by the military against this heart breaking lack of leadership can make a powerful statement that hastens a change to the indifference of this shallow little man who just lets our soldiers die.

Veterans: Please forward to your lists. High Priority!
