Stuxnet Clone 'Duqu': The Hydrogen Bomb of Cyberwarfare?

Stuxnet Clone 'Duqu': The Hydrogen Bomb of Cyberwarfare?

If the Stuxnet virus was the atom bomb of cyberwarfare, then the discovery this week of the "Duqu" virus is the hydrogen bomb, security experts are warning.
It is the second major weaponized virus to turn computers into lethal weapons with devastating destructive power.
The new programdiscovered by Symantec on Tuesday with the help of an unnamed research lab, uses much of the same code as the 2010 Stuxnet virus did. But instead of destroying the systems it infects, Duqu secretly penetrates them and, according to some experts, creates “back door” vulnerabilities that can be exploited to destroy the networks at any time its creators may choose.
The original Stuxnet malware was the culmination of a vast technical and espionage effort that had only one target in mind: the Iranian nuclear program. And is widely believed to be the work of the United States and Israel. Experts who looked at the program were amazed at its ability to penetrate Iran’s secure, highly protected security system and destroy it without being detected.
Its success set back the Iranian nuclear program for years.
Experts were also amazed at the depth of information that had been collected on the Iranian program, information that allowed its secure nuclear system to be penetrated so easily and without detection. Among those elements, according to Ralph Langer who was one of the first to dissect the Stuxnet virus, were stolen certificates of authorization, highly protected codes that power Siemens industrial computers, and the internal workings of Iran’s computer systems. Much of it, they surmised, had to be done using human rather than computer intelligence agents.
With Duqu that is no longer the case.
According to Michael Sconzo, a senior security officer at worldwide computer security company RSA, the new virus embeds itself in computer systems for 36 days and “analyzes and profiles” the system's workings before sending its findings out to a a secure server and self destructing.
“It's an intelligence operation,” he told FoxNews.com. “We still aren’t sure of all the things it looks for yet but it is a likely precursor to an attack. It is a Trojan horse.”
But he said its intention is to to allow its users to understand the inner workings of the targeted computer system to create malware that can attack the system.
Among the things currently known is that it records is every keystroke used on a system, allowing it to learn and pass on passwords to various systems inside the network, thus making future penetration much easier.
He speculated that the 36-day window might allow the program to collect password patterns because many companies require password changes every thirty days.
As with Stuxnet, there are still a number of open questions that security firms around the word are still trying to answer, Sconzo said.
Among them: Which companies have been hit; how extensive is the collection of data from their computers; and, because of the short period of penetration, how imminent is an attack.
And the most important question still remains open: Who's behind the attacks?
Several experts have suggested that the perpetrators must be the same group that created Stuxnet. That's far from certain, Sconzo said
“The Stuxnet code has been out there for some time,” he told FoxNews.com. “Anyone with a decent knowledge of computers could reverse engineer it.”
While that raises the possibility of Iranian retaliation for Stuxnet, which has been a cause of concern for some time, or even terrorists, he said there was too much not yet known to draw any conclusions about authorship.
“Just who is doing it may be the most important question we need to answer,” he said, because its discovery raises a great deal of “fear, uncertainty and doubt.”
“There is nothing out there available to stop it,” he said.

Is Occupy Wall Street a Domestic Terrorist Threat?

Is Occupy Wall Street a Domestic Terrorist Threat?

Ben Johnson,The White House Watch
If the most recent news reports are to be believed, all the Occupy Wall Street protesters have to fear is each other. A 19-year-old demonstrator says her tent-mate,“Leland,”raped her last weekend in Cleveland’s Public Square. Seattle police arrested a man who took part in that city’s occupation after he allegedly exposed himself to children five times. At the protest’s center of operations in New York City’s Zuccotti Park, some protesters have tried to finance their way into the top 1 percent by ripping off their fellow rioters. “Stealing is our biggest problem at the moment,” said 18-year-old Nan Terrie. The take includes Macintosh computers, phones, cameras, even $2,500 in cash donations. Cities and localities are alreadypaying a heavy price to protect or clean up after the looney Left’s wretched refuse. But could these large scale demonstrations become the scene of violence and tragedy? It may be easier than you think.
Taking note of the crowds’organizers,Floyd and Mary Beth Brown say people should prepare for violence from the Occupiers themselves. Adding additional reason for concern,Clinton pollster Doug Schoen wrote in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, that “nearly one-third (31%) would support violence to advance their agenda.”Like the mobs some of these same groups whipped up by in Seattle in 1999,violence could spring forth from the ranks of the affluent aggrieved themselves.
Violence could as easily be brought up from without. While the city’s police dutifully attend to the antics of spoiled malcontents, terrorists could strike at a location on the other side of town left underprotected.
But violence could hit closer to the OWS protesters yet. Suppose you were an innovativejihadist looking for new ways to strike fear into the heart of the Great Satan. Where would you strike? Terrorism,by definition, means targeting the civilian population to make a political statement. Where could you be assured that, wherever you are in the country, you would be able to locate a large, earnest, welcoming crowd of infidels?
If a suicide bomber wished to infiltrate an Occupy Wall Street protest….

Reid signals government jobs must take priority over private-sector jobs

Reid signals government jobs must take priority over private-sector jobs

By Pete Kasperowicz 10/19/11 10:16 AM ET
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday indicated Congress needs to worry about government jobs more than private-sector jobs, and that this is why Senate Democrats are pushing a bill aimed at shoring up teachers and first-responders.
"It's very clear that private-sector jobs have been doing just fine; it's the public-sector jobs where we've lost huge numbers, and that's what this legislation is all about," Reid said on the Senate floor.
Reid was responding to recent comments from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who accused Democrats of purposefully pursuing higher taxes as part of the teacher/first-responder bill, S. 1723, so that Republicans would oppose it. McConnell said the bill was meant to fail in order to give Democrats an issue to run on in the 2012 election, but Reid said the Republicans are simply trying to defeat President Obama any way they can.
The legislation Reid is defending is part of Obama's jobs package. Vice President Biden was in Pennsylvania, an important election state, on Tuesday to push for the administration's plan on increasing the number of teachers.
Reid reiterated his emphasis on creating government jobs by saying Democrats are looking to "put hundreds of thousands of people back to work teaching children, have more police patrolling our streets, firefighters fighting our fires, doing the rescue work that they do so well … that's our priority." He said Republicans are calling the bill a "failure" because they are "using a different benchmark for success than we are."

Private-sector jobs have increased over the last 19 months, while government jobs have lagged. They've also seen cuts in several states that are struggling to balanced their books.
Reid also said a majority of people polled support the bill, and that the tax hike needed to fund the $35 billion spending program is minimal.
"My friend, the Republican leader … is complaining about a tax of one-half of 1 percent … on people who make more than $1 million a year to pay for a program that would stop teachers from being laid off and rehire some of the teachers that have been laid off," Reid said.
Democrats who support the bill have said it would help save 400,000 teacher jobs and thousands of first-responder jobs that have either been cut or could soon be cut. Reid said Wednesday that these layoffs are "rooted in the last administration," but did not explain further.
Senate Democrats are hoping to pass S. 1723 as early as this week, although votes could be delayed until early November, depending on the progress made on passing a 2012 spending bill.
Reid also dismissed efforts by the Republican House to ease environmental regulations as a way to create jobs.
"The Republican response has been cutting back environmental health safeguards, I guess hoping that a sicker, more polluted country is a better place to create jobs, and it's not," Reid said.
A spokesman for Reid pointed out that Senate Democrats have tried to pass several bills aimed at spurring private sector job growth, but have been blocked by Republicans. Among other things, Democrats have proposed tax cuts to help companies hire workers and write off expenses, as well as infrastructure jobs that would add to private construction payrolls.

OWS Leaders Caught on Tape Orchestrating Mob Activity and Arrests (Videos)

Setting the Stage–
Radical anti-government activist and leader of the anti-capitalist #occupy movement,Lisa Fithian, was caught in action at the Occupy Chicago protest on October 10, 2011, training Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) members on how to stage their arrests for the cameras.
This is an eye-opening video by the EAGFoundation:
Kyle Olson at Big Government has more on these staged mob activities and arrests.
And, in this video, the #OWS organizer directs protesters (at 2:40 mark), “If you don’t have a camera, we’ll get arrested later.”

Police arrested five men, whom they described as French-Moroccan nationals, for an attempted break-in at the Bexar County Courthouse in San Antonio early Wednesday.
DEVELOPING: The FBI and local police say they are trying to figure out why five French-Moroccan nationals tried to break into a Texas courthouse in the middle of the night.
At least five foreign nationals are in custody after the attempted break-in at the Bexar County Courthouse in San Antonio, which triggered a bomb scare and FBI terror investigation, a source close to the case tells FoxNews.com.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said the suspects are believed to be of French-Moroccan descent.
FBI agents and a bomb squad were called to courthouse after two men were found inside the building early Wednesday, 1200 WOAI News Radio reports.
The pair, along with another man, who was outside in an RV, are being questioned by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.
