Fouad Ajami: Muslim Rage and the Obama Retreat

We can't declare a unilateral end to our troubles, or avert our gaze from the disorder that afflicts the societies of the Greater Middle East.

By FOUAD AJAMI

This is not a Jimmy Carter moment—a U.S. Embassy and its staff seized and held hostage for 444 days, America's enemies taking stock of its weakness, its allies running for cover. But the anti-American protests that broke upon 20 nations this past week must be reckoned a grand personal failure for Barack Obama, and a case of hubris undone.
No American president before this one had proclaimed such intimacy with a world that stretches from Morocco to Indonesia. From the start of his administration, Mr. Obama put forth his own biography as a bridge to those aggrieved nations. He would be a "different president," he promised, and the years he lived among Muslims would acquit him—and thus America itself. He was the un-Bush.
And so, in June 2009, Mr. Obama descended on Cairo. He had opposed the Iraq war, he had Muslim relatives, and he would offer Egyptians, and by extension other Arabs, the promise of a "new beginning." They told their history as a tale of victimization at the hands of outsiders, and he empathized with that narrative.
He spoke of "colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold War in which Muslim-majority countries were too often treated as proxies without regard to their own aspirations."
Without knowing it, he had broken a time-honored maxim of that world: Never speak ill of your own people when in the company of strangers. There was too little recognition of the malignant trilogy—anti-Americanism, anti-Semitism and anti-modernism—that had poisoned the life of Egypt and much of the region.

A protester in Peshawar, Pakistan, burns a photograph of President Obama, Sept. 17.
The crowd took in what this stranger had to say, and some were flattered by his embrace of their culture. But ever since its traumatic encounter with the guns and ideas of the West in the opening years of the 19th century, the region had seen conquerors come and go. Its people have an unfailing eye for the promises and predilections of outsiders.
It didn't take long for this new American leader to come down to earth. In the summer of 2009, Iran erupted in rebellion against its theocratic rulers. That upheaval exposed the contradictions at the heart of the Obama approach. At his core, he was a hyper-realist: The call of freedom did not tug at him. He was certain that the theocracy would respond to his outreach, resulting in a diplomatic breakthrough. But Iran's clerical rulers had no interest in a breakthrough. We are the Great Satan, and they need their foreign demons to maintain their grip on power.
The embattled "liberals" in the region were awakened to the truth of Mr. Obama. He was a man of the status quo, with a superficial knowledge of lands beyond. In Cairo, he had described himself as a "student of history." But in his first foreign television interview, he declared his intention to restore U.S. relations with the Islamic world to "the same respect and partnership that America had with the Muslim world as recently as 20 or 30 years ago."
This coincided, almost to the day, with the 30th anniversary of the Ayatollah Khomeini's rise to power in Iran. That "golden age" he sought to restore covered the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the fall of Beirut to the forces of terror, deadly attacks on our embassies, the downing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, and more. A trail of terror had shadowed the American presence.
Yet here was a president who would end this history, who would withdraw from both the "good war" in Afghanistan and the bad one in Iraq. Here was a president who would target America's real enemy—al Qaeda. "Osama bin Laden is dead," we've been told time and again, and good riddance to him. But those attacking our embassies last week had a disturbing rebuttal: "Obama, we are Osama!" they chanted, some brandishing al Qaeda flags.
Until last Tuesday's deadly attack on our consulate in Benghazi, it was the fashion of Mr. Obama and his lieutenants to proclaim that the tide of war is receding. But we can't declare a unilateral end to our troubles, nor can we avert our gaze from the disorder that afflicts the societies of the Greater Middle East.
A Muslim world that can take to the streets, as far away as Jakarta, in protest against a vulgar film depiction of the Prophet Muhammad—yet barely call up a crowd on behalf of a Syrian population that has endured unspeakable hell at the hands of the dictator Bashar al-Assad—is in need of self-criticism and repair. We do these societies no favor if we leave them to the illusion that they can pass through the gates of the modern world carrying those ruinous ideas.
Yet the word in Washington is that we must pull back from those troubled Arab and Muslim lands. The grand expectations that Mr. Obama had for Afghanistan have largely been forgotten. The Taliban are content to wait us out, secure in the knowledge that, come 2014, we and our allies will have quit the place. And neighboring Pakistan, a nuclear-armed country with 170 million people, is written off as a hotbed of extremism.
Meanwhile, Syria burns and calls for help, but the call goes unanswered. The civil war there has become a great Sunni-Shiite schism. Lebanon teeters on the edge. More important, trouble has spilled into Turkey. The Turks have come to resent the American abdication and the heavy burden the Syrian struggle has imposed on them. In contrast, the mullahs in Iran have read the landscape well and are determined to sustain the Assad dictatorship.
Our foreign policy has been altered, as never before, to fit one man's electoral needs. We hear from the presidential handlers only what they want us to believe about the temper of distant lands. It was only yesterday that our leader, we are told, had solved the riddle of our position in the world.
Give him your warrant, the palace guard intone, at least until the next election. In tales of charismatic, chosen leaders, it is always, and only, about the man at the helm.

Hard Unemployment Truths About "Soft" Skills
Hi, Folks,

I read a (another!) depressing article in yesterday's WSJ. We've heard for a long time that the U.S. workforce lacks enough people with such needed skills as math, science, technology, computer aptitude, and problem solving. But this article plumbed several manufacturing and human resource employment groups to learn more about skill shortages, and discovered some dismaying data.

I shall paraphrase and condense for brevity.  Representatives were asked, "What exactly are the skills you can't find?" One of the reps looked sheepishly around the room and responded, "To be perfectly honest....we have a hard time finding people who can pass the drug test." They added that applicants are often so under-qualified that just finding someone who could properly answer the telephone was sometimes a challenge. Many employers said they would be happy just to find applicants who have the sort of "soft skills" that used to be taken for granted....qualities like interpersonal skills, enthusiasm/motivation; simple grammar and spelling ability, professionalism, and work ethic.  Employers complained it is harder today to find "punctual, reliable workers," and those who have acceptable social discipline, never mind high-level qualifications like the ability to write computer code or operate complex graphics software -- although those are in short supply also.

After watching the so-called "professionals" on parade during the recent Chicago teachers' strike, and the daily examples in the media of our collapsing communities, the erosion of intact families, the focus on materialism, the abandonment of religious and moral values, and the general dumbing-down of America, is it any wonder that we have so many young people who lack the basics for economic and social success?

I cannot believe that the President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama, and his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, spending $70,000 of taxpayer money on advertising on Pakistani television programs to continue the fiction that we were attacked because of a YouTube film trailer and we apologize to the Muslims.
US spends $70,000 on Pakistan ad denouncing anti-Muslim film (Obama's apology tour continues)
The U.S. has bought $70,000 worth of air time on seven Pakistani television channels to air an ad showing President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denouncing the anti-Islamic video that has sparked violent protests in the Middle East and North Africa.
In the 30-second ad that began running Thursday, Obama says, "Since our founding the United States has been a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate religious beliefs of others."
Clinton appears after Obama and says, "Let me state very clearly that the United States has absolutely nothing to do with this video. We absolutely reject its contents. America's commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation."
This is unbelievable …
It wasn’t the movie that provoked a terrorist attack on the anniversary of 9/11. It was an drone airstrike that killed a Muslim terrorist leader and what better day to avenge his death than the anniversary of 9/11.
More distraction from the fact that our sovereign territory was deliberately under-protected by administration policy and that the Muslims have little respect for Obama and his weakling policies. They understand strength and the will to use it. Some soldiers are amazed that relatives of dead fighters will ask for their Quran, but express no surprise or hostility towards the troops that killed their relatives. They understand strength and the will to use it. They respect fighters as warriors.
If Obama thought he could validate his Nobel Peace Prize by claiming a Muslim truce or a resolution of the Palestinian problem, he was and is sadly mistaken.
Bottom line …
We need to remove this incompetent fool, Barrack Hussein Obama, and his fellow travelers from office. And for those who think Hillary Clinton has somehow been injected with political wisdom from her husband Bill Clinton, you are mistaken. Hillary has proven to be little more than an incompetent ideologue when it comes to diplomacy.

Obama, once again, is trying to spin the narrative of the Libya terrorist attack for his own political purposes …
The White House reported 4 Americans died. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other unnamed people. One was assigned to Chris Stevens’ security detail. Another was an information specialist with the State Department – and the remaining two were former Navy SEALS working on an unspecified security mission which had NOTHING to do with facility security or the personal security of the Ambassador.
The fact that these two courageous Navy SEALS stepped forward to defend U.S. property under attack and against overwhelming force speaks volumes about their patriotism and courage.
So why isn’t Obama hailing these two SEALS, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty as American heroes and telling the story of their voluntary bravery to the entire country?
Could it be because President Obama, the Commander-in-Chief does not understand the military, does not respect the military and is a total Marxist/Communist chickenshit when it comes to saving his political ass by saying or doing anything that advances his cause?
What are they hiding behind their curtain of lies?
  • Obama and Hillary Clinton decided to promote a low-key “non-confrontational” posture in Muslim nations?
  • Obama and Hillary Clinton decided that outsourcing the security of American lives and property to foreign nationals was beneficial to the Muslim community?
  • Obama and Hillary Clinton did not see ANY threat to Americans on the anniversary of 9/11 – a day linked in infamy with Muslim terrorists?
  • Obama and Hillary Clinton chose to ignore credible intelligence from a host nation deliberately to demonstrate to Muslims that we were “friendly?”
  • That the focus on the YouTube video which few saw was a ruse to hide their incompetence and provide them with plausible deniability for their dereliction of duty?
  • That this was not a casual demonstration – given the late night attack with heavy weaponry and no apparent protesters in sight?
  • That the Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, is a talking sock-puppet ignoring the truth and spouting the talking points?
  • That Ambassador Stevens was openly gay and posted to a Muslim nation. And that he may have been sodomized by Muslim terrorists?
Bottom line …
You cannot trust the crew in the White House and their fellow travelers when it comes to national security, the military or even our domestic economy.
THROW THE BUMS OUT! OBUMMER AND HIS FELLOW TRAVELERS!
HONOR THE AMERICANS WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES FOR AMERICA!

First, there was the apology tour to a Muslim country.
Then, there was disrespect for Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu – to his face and behind his back.
Now, comes this campaign ad which makes me wonder where Barack Hussein Obama really stands and his willingness to uphold the Constitution to protect Americans.
From Chapter IX of the Washington Examiner series “The Obama You Don’t Know” …

The Arab-American network behind Obama

President Obama's controversial relationships with radical figures like Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi have been well-publicized in recent years.Prior to his academic career in the United States, Khalidi worked for Yasser Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organization when it was classified by the State Department as a terrorist group.
Less well-known is a cluster of Chicago businessmen who formed an Arab-American network at the heart of Obama's political apparatus.
Chief among them was Obama mentor Tony Rezko. Born in Aleppo, Syria, home of strongman Bashar al-Assad, Rezko migrated to the U.S. in the late 1970s and built a political and financial empire in Chicago and Springfield, the Illinois capital. <Source>
Bottom line …
Shouldn’t we know where our President stands and that he embraces our Constitution? Obama’s background is filled with political and religious radicals – including a domestic terrorist. Obama’s administration constantly attempts to skirt the Constitution and Congress to promote radical laws which favor socialism and hurt capitalism.
The only solution is to throw Obama and his fellow travelers in the House and Senate out of office. Reforming the self-serving cesspool of Washington politics. And our ONLY hope for reform is to elect Mitt Romney. And then put forth a constitutional conservative in 2016 unless Romney fulfills his promise to restore jobs, reduce the national debt and protect Social Security and Medicare.

With all of the millions of dollars spent in advertising by Ford, GM trying to convince the American public that they have superior pickups with great towing capacity … it will be a Toyota that is seen around the world as towing the Space Shuttle to her last resting place in Los Angeles. I would have mentioned Dodge, but they are now owned by Fiat – after Barack Hussein Obama “single-handedly” rescued the automotive industry. Turning GM into a union pension fund with an associated car company as a funding device.
Not only is this a public relations disaster – but a national insult.
Even though Toyota builds great vehicles (I owned a customized Toyota Celica GTS convertible) and employs thousands of Americans, it is not an iconic American brand as is the space shuttle. The Toyota Tundra CrewMax (half-ton) is a good, solid vehicle but it is not a Ford F-150!
This is symptomatic of the Obama Administration who has outsourced our space program to the Russians who charge us millions to place American astronauts in space. Where NASA’s chief thought it was NASA’s mission to build Muslim self-esteem.
Time to return America to Americans.
Personally I hope that the Toyota breaks down and some passing construction worker hitches up his F-150 and completes the mission.

    Democrats shun hospitality
    by Rev. Austin Miles

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (9/11/12) When the DNC came to Charlotte, area churches, 100 of them, offered hospitality, not knowing how much the Dems hate God and would actually boo God at the convention. They had no idea how that hatred would be directed at them and their churches.

The Sunday before the DNC, over 9000 people had come together to pray for the convention. Then, wanting to extend hospitality to the visitors to their city, 56 of the churches set out to “Adopt-a-Delegation.”

They put together gift baskets featuring Carolina Pralines and a letter welcoming them to the city and offering assistance in transportation, childcare or spiritual matters.

According to writer, Todd Starnes, The DNC banned the churches from distributing the gift baskets to delegates because, DNC said, the congregations hold values that are contrary to the party platform. Read that carefully.

David Benham, one of the organizers of the outreach said, “We were just trying to display Southern hospitality.” DNC officials, however, conveyed to city leaders that the Christians would not be allowed to present their gift baskets.

Even the Charlotte Mayor’s office jumped in to tell the churches not to participate, saying that their views on women’s rights are contrary to the platform. That’s right….the same platform that booed God later.

Benham then asked if they could send welcome letters to the delegates. Again, the DNC refused, because, they said, “The churches hold pro-life values.”

The baskets did not contain a single political or pro-life message. They just wanted to give them regional candles and a welcome letter. The DNC refused to return numerous phone calls seeking comment.

But it gets worse. When a gathering of 200 Muslims showed up to pray for the convention, the Dems welcomed them with open arms and the liberal media gave extensive national coverage.

It is ironic that this day, in the shadow of that Islamic prayer event, we commemorate the greatest tragedy in American History, when Muslims attacked America on September 11, 2001, brutally killing thousands of innocent people.

Muslims who publicly state their hatred of our country with fierce determination to kill us all and put America under Sharia Law, are welcomed by the Democratic Party while Christians are pushed out of sight like criminals because they respect life and hold family values.

These are the same democrats who want you to vote them into office to direct the United States of America and every life from beginning to end. It is obvious that we must not let this happen.

Our thanks to Rev. Ed Berkey (retired) who alerted us to this story.
