Netanyahu says military option 'necessary' on Iran by Staff Writers Washington (AFP) Dec 08, 2013 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that a "military option" was "necessary" for the success of negotiations aimed at reining in Iran's disputed nuclear program. Netanyahu said the Jewish state shared US President Barack Obama's "preference" to pursue diplomacy "but for diplomacy to succeed, it must be coupled with powerful sanctions and a credible military threat." "A diplomatic solution is better than a military option but a military option is necessary for diplomacy to succeed as a powerful sanction because of the pressure," he told a forum hosted by the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. Netanyahu's remarks follow a landmark deal between world powers and Tehran under which the Islamic state will freeze or curb some of its atomic activities in return for limited relief from crippling international sanctions. The interim six-month accord struck in Geneva on November 24 aims to build trust and buy time to resolve the years-long standoff with the West. Without the prospect of a military option, sanctions "will begin to unravel" in the wake of last month's deal, Netanyahu said via video link. "Steps must be taken to prevent further erosion of the sanctions because ultimately the sanctions remain an essential element of the international effort to compel Iran to dismantle its nuclear military infrastructure, to take apart all its centrifuges," he said. "We shouldn't assume that more and tougher sanctions won't lead to a better deal." Iran has a long history of belligerent statements toward Israel, while the Jewish state has warned of military action to prevent a nuclear Iran that it says would pose an existential threat. "Preventing Iran from achieving a nuclear weapon capability is the primary challenge of our generation because a nuclear Iran would literally change the course of history," Netanyahu said. He reiterated that the Iranian regime was "committed to our destruction," adding that the international community must also demand it change its "genocidal policy." Speaking to the same forum on Saturday, Obama warned that Israel's vision of an "ideal" nuclear agreement with Iran was unrealistic and put the chance of any acceptable final agreement emerging at no more than 50/50.

Billions of dollars annually are being used to fund operations conducted by the United States intelligence community, the likes of which allow the government to eavesdrop on emails, listen to world leaders' phone calls and about everything in-between.

One thing that budget hasn't bought, however, is subtlety. The US National Reconnaissance Office launched a top-secret surveillance satellite into space Thursday evening, and the official emblem for the spy agency's latest mission is, well, certainly accurate, to say the least.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence live-tweeted Thursday's launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and throughout the course of the ordeal made no effort to ignore the logo for the NROL-39 mission.

The latest spy satellite to be sent into orbit by the NRO can be recognized by its seal: a malevolent octopus with furrowed brows that also happens to be wrapping its tentacles around all corners of the Earth.

"Nothing is beyond our reach," the NRO boasts on the bottom half of the emblem just below the most sinister-looking cephalopod likely ever to be sent into space.

Along with the National Security Agency and more than a dozen others, the NRO is one of 16 federal offices under the directive of DNI James Clapper and is responsible for building and operating the spy satellites used to collect intelligence around the world. NRO-gathered intelligence was reportedly instrumental in the mission that brought US Navy SEAL's to the home of former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, and decades earlier the agency launched a school-bus sized satellite into orbit to spy on Soviets at the height of the Cold War.

This time around the ODNI says the satellite's payload is mostly classified, but did admit over Twitter that around a dozen mini satellites funded by both the NRO and NASA will be brought along to orbit as well.

Another thing they didn't bother to acknowledge, of course, is how the lack-of-subtlety apparent in the Earth-strangling octopus emblem could quickly be used by critics of the US intelligence community as fodder to further condemn the government for admitting to their sheer and unmatched ability to control the world's information.

Thursday's launch of the latest NRO satellite occurred almost exactly six-month-to-the-day after The Guardian and Washington Post newspapers published the first of what has since been revealed to be a trove of leaked national security document showing proof of the NSA's widespread and extensive ability to monitor people around the world.

On June 6 those papers first disclosed evidence in which the NSA was documented to demand telephony metadata from millions of people daily, and a steady stream of leaked files attributed to former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden have since captivated the world while also raising a number of questions.

For half a year now, leaked NSA documents have let the world learn that the US monitors the phone habits of not just Americans, but also foreigners sitting atop the governments of allied nations.

Reporters with access to the cache of pilfered papers have reportedly released only a sliver of what's been reported to be 50,000 documents during those six months, but the response has already been widespread. The leaders of countries such as Brazil and Germany have lashed out at the NSA's behavior, and DNI Clapper and his deputy manning the NSA, Gen. Keith Alexander, have easily become two of the most embattled public figures in Washington.

That being said, you'd think ODNI would reconsider launching a new spy satellite. Or maybe even not put an octopus strangling the Earth on the outside.

"You may want to downplay the massive dragnet spying thing right now," Chris Soghoian, the chief technologist at the American Civil Liberties Union, tweeted Thursday. "This logo isn't helping."

According to a top-secret budget document released by Snowden and first reported on in August, the NRO is in the midst of modernizing their signals intelligence, geospatial and communications system to replace current capabilities.

Looking at the NROL-39 logo, people could be forgiven for mistaking it for a version of the Lovecraftian elder god Cthulhu, who wants to swallow the Earth whole. But that is not the only National Reconnaissance Office emblem with an interesting spin on the space-spying theme: others include Masonic motifs, superhero ones and a few more that, frankly, defy easy classification.

UCLA, Cedars Sinai, St. Johns, USC – all worthless if my insurance coverage denies top-notch coverage at these facilities, or even worse, denies me medically-necessary treatment because it is been judged “experimental” to hold down costs. Everyone should be concerned … New Affordable Care US health plans will exclude top hospitals Americans who are buying insurance plans over online exchanges, under what is known as Obamacare, will have limited access to some of the nation’s leading hospitals, including two world-renowned cancer centres. Amid a drive by insurers to limit costs, the majority of insurance plans being sold on the newhealthcare exchanges in New York, Texas, and California, for example, will not offer patients’ access to Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan or MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, two top cancer centres, or Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, one of the top research and teaching hospitals in the country. Experts say the move by insurers to limit consumers’ choices and steer them away from hospitals that are considered too expensive, or even “inefficient”, reflects the new competitive landscape in the insurance industry since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, Barack Obama’s 2010 healthcare law. It could become another source of political controversy for the Obama administration next year, when the plans take effect. Frustrated consumers could then begin to realise what is not always evident when buying a product as complicated as healthcare insurance: that their new plans do not cover many facilities or doctors “in network”. But the question remains, can you allow civilian politicians and advisors with little or no military knowledge or experience to dictate battlefield rules of engagement? Can you allow anti-America political ideologues like Valerie Jarrett to interfere with military operations and compromise American lives when the window of opportunity for taking action does not coincide with the favorability ratings of the President or if a failure might have negative consequences on the President’s poll numbers? Likewise, can you sharp-shoot effective military leaders by snooping on their personal lives and dismissing them for personal foibles that do not rise to the point where they could be criminally prosecuted under the Military’s Uniform Code Military Justice? How many people actually believe that General Petraeus’ love affair was “accidently” found by investigators looking at someone’s e-mail account? A connection between the sharp increase in American deaths and restrictive rules of engagement is difficult to confirm. More deaths surely stemmed from ramped-up counterterrorism raids and the Taliban’s response with more homemade bombs, the No. 1 killer of NATO forces in Afghanistan. Rather than produce clear, easy-to-read and understand documents, they revel in hyper-complicated documents that requires a lawyer to read, interpret, and in the final analysis, the client, not the lawyer, suffers the consequences for misinterpretations. But, to have lawyers interject political and legal viewpoints on the battlefield is to bind our soldiers to rules that favor the enemy and prolong the conflict. Truth-be-told, Hamid Karzai is little more than the kleptocratic mayor of Kabul, stealing billions while the real power still rests with the tribal warlords who are able to dictate policy in tribal areas. Why the Obama Administration would listen to this tin-horn pol is beyond me? However, if one follows the money, combatants on both sides – the military equipment suppliers and contractors and the kleptocrat politicians – have very little incentive for ending the war. To what end? The purpose of war and military action is to force the enemy’s leadership to accept the victor’s point of view. To this end, the military kills people and breaks things. While collateral damage among civilians is tragic, it is by no means avoidable. Especially when our enemies stage operations among civilians knowing the United States, unlike Russia, China, or other nations, has a distaste for media attention with political consequences at home. Why any military unit allows embedded reporters is a mystery. Perhaps we should ask General McChrystal who saw his career destroyed and tarnished when a reporter recorded the remarks of some of his subordinates during their leisure time activities? Bottom line … We need to throw out the progressive socialist democrats who would rather see Americans than our enemies killed here and abroad. We need to set a clear political objective and a clear military policy. Then we attack our enemies with the sole objective of winning and minimizing the loss of our troops. We investigate war profiteering and prosecute the profiteers and their political connections that enabled the activity and benefited from the profits. It is about time mealy-mouthed politicians listen to the people. Stop with enlarging the size and scope of government by citing terrorism – and actually kill terrorists and those who support them. Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism and the source of the enhanced improvised explosive devices that killed and maimed thousands of Americans, yet the Obama Administration sits idly by while they pursue their nuclear ambitions and continue to threaten the region. What other U.S. President, including Jimmy Carter, has Americans wondering about his loyalties and his actions that seem to disadvantage our allies and confer benefits to our enemies? Throw the progressive socialist democrats out of office in 2014. Start rebuilding America’s strength, both economically and militarily. If we must go it alone, so be it. Following the progressive socialist democrats and their damn lawyers down the socialist path to destruction of our Constitution is not an option. As for the rules of engagement: “Do they pose even a potential threat to our fighting men? Yes, neutralize them in the most permanent way. If they are they standing next to children, women, and non-combatants – too bad, it’s their choice to place themselves near their fellow citizens and put their lives in danger. I could make the same case that was made for using an atomic weapon on Japan, it saved millions of lives, American, Japanese, and others in the area of combat operations around the world. -- steve
