Principled pragmatists as only a Stoic can be...

It is via Robert Penn Warren that we are gifted with this wonderful encapsulation of the beautiful pairing of opposites that embodied Abraham Lincoln. Warren quotes the philosopher Sidney Hook, who said that Lincoln strove to be “principled without being fanatical and flexible without being opportunistic.” This, Hook said, “summarizes the logic and ethics of pragmatism in action.” Stoicism, which held that the sole good was virtue, is not always properly associated with pragmatism. After all, Cato, the hero of the Stoics, was both fanatical and inflexible. Yet it was Lincoln who managed to keep his country together while Cato could not. It was Lincoln who despite his assassination, allowed America to live on as the last great hope of freedom on this earth, while Cato committed suicide by his own hand and with his last breath, saw Rome perish as a Republic. The legacy of Marcus Aurelius leans more towards Lincoln than Cato. Marcus kept Rome together despite civil strife and foreign threats. He was also deeply pragmatic. If the cucumber is bitter, he wrote, throw it out. If there are brambles in the path, go around. He knew that his job as emperor required that he balances principles and compromise, flexibility and responsibility. More, he had to do this not in the theoretical realm, but through actions that affected millions of people. Because, as he wrote, he did not live in Plato’s Republic—he lived in the real world. If we are lucky, none of us will have to face the challenges of any of these men, but we can still follow their example today and be principled pragmatists as only a Stoic can be.

An unmarried couple with stay at home mom nets $21,600 disability + $10,800 free housing + $6,000 free Obamacare + $6,000 free food + $4,800 free utilities + $6,000 pell grant money to spend + $12,000 a year in college tuition free from pell grant + $8,800 tax benefit for being a single mother = $75,000 a year in benefits! Do you have any idea why the country is $18 trillion plus in debt and half the population is sitting on their butts letting the other half pay their way?

Florida School Shooting and Personal Responsibly

Don't tell me it's a gun control issue. Don't attempt to even hint that it's the NRA or Trump that is causing this. This.. THIS is a mental health issue that is NOT being addressed in America. We all had bullies in school, we had "weird" kids but they didn't gun down other students. THIS is directly related to a combination of mental health, Poor parenting, and the pussy-fication of this nation. When our children don't know what bathroom to use, are offended by everything, and see that they are exonerated from their actions because they can blame it on others.. THAT In itself IS the problem. Murder is illegal. Drugs are illegal. Yet they still happen. Calling for stronger gun laws isn't the answer. It isn't the gun.. start holding the perpetrator responsible, and the system that failed them.

Florida Teacher On School Shooting: “I’ll Be the One Brave Enough to Say It” Raley says in her post that she’s willing to withstand all the verbal backlash that may come from her strong opinion because she’s a teacher in the schools with our kids every day and it’s her life on the line. Though I think there are a variety of changes that need to be made to stop these terrible school murders from happening, I do think that what Raley said NEEDED to be said, and as a Florida teacher she certainly has the credibility. Here is her powerful post, in full: florida teacher Okay, I’ll be the bad guy and say what no one else is brave enough to say, but wants to say. I’ll take all the criticism and attacks from everyone because you know what? I’m a TEACHER. I live this life daily. And I wouldn’t do anything else! But I also know daily I could end up in an active shooter situation. Until we, as a country, are willing to get serious and talk about mental health issues, lack of available care for the mental health issues, lack of discipline in the home, horrendous lack of parental support when the schools are trying to control horrible behavior at school (oh no! Not MY KID. What did YOU do to cause my kid to react that way?), lack of moral values, and yes, I’ll say it-violent video games that take away all sensitivity to ANY compassion for others’ lives, as well as reality TV that makes it commonplace for people to constantly scream up in each others’ faces and not value any other person but themselves, we will have a gun problem in school. Our kids don’t understand the permanency of death anymore!!! I grew up with guns. Everyone knows that. But you know what? My parents NEVER supported any bad behavior from me. I was terrified of doing something bad at school, as I would have not had a life until I corrected the problem and straightened my ass out. My parents invaded my life. They knew where I was ALL the time. They made me have a curfew. They made me wake them up when I got home. They made me respect their rules. They had full control of their house, and at any time could and would go through every inch of my bedroom, backpack, pockets, anything! Parents: it’s time to STEP UP! Be the parent that actually gives a crap! Be the annoying mom that pries and knows what your kid is doing. STOP being their friend. They have enough “friends” at school. Be their parent. Being the “cool mom” means not a damn thing when either your kid is dead or your kid kills other people because they were allowed to have their space and privacy in YOUR HOME. I’ll say it again. My home was filled with guns growing up. For God’s sake, my daddy was an 82nd Airborne Ranger who lost half his face serving our country. But you know what? I never dreamed of shooting anyone with his guns. I never dreamed of taking one! I was taught respect for human life, compassion, rules, common decency, and most of all, I was taught that until I moved out, my life and bedroom wasn’t mine…it was theirs. And they were going to know what was happening because they loved me and wanted the best for me. There. Say that I’m a horrible person. I didn’t bring up gun control, and I will refuse to debate it with anyone. This post wasn’t about gun control. This was me, loving the crap out of people and wanting the best for them. This was about my school babies and knowing that God created each one for greatness, and just wanting them to reach their futures. It’s about 20 years ago this year I started my teaching career. Violence was not this bad 20 years ago. Lack of compassion wasn’t this bad 20 years ago. And God knows 20 years ago that I wasn’t afraid daily to call a parent because I KNEW that 9 out of 10 would cuss me out, tell me to go to Hell, call the news on me, call the school board on me, or post all over FaceBook about me because I called to let them know what their child chose to do at school…because they are a NORMAL kid!!!!! Those 17 lives mattered. When are we going to take our own responsibility seriously? Raley’s points about parental combativeness when it comes to teacher’s calling out their child’s misdeeds is DEFINITELY an issue. As parents, we are the first line of defense to combat these atrocities, by raising kids who would NEVER commit them — and would never have the resources or privacy to hide their intentions inside our homes. As she states, in her nearly 20-year career as a Florida teacher, compassion has gone down and violence had gone up. That is something we cannot ignore on a fundamental level as we work to pass new laws to keep our kids safe at school. Parents, those of us who follow Christ’s teaching must impress the HUGE importance of teaching our kids to follow HIS command to love our neighbors as ourselves and TO PUT OTHERS BEFORE OURSELVES. Because we need a whole lot more people willing to DIE TO SELF before we can STOP OTHERS FROM DYING.

Origin of Left & Right… I have often wondered why it is that Conservatives are called the "right" and Liberals are called the "left". By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible: Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV) - "The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left." Thus sayeth the Lord. Some Tips to Share With Your Friends & Families...

NOT ALL THIEVES ARE STUPID 1.LONG-TERM PARKING Some people left their car in the long-term parking at Windsor while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car's registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people's home in Essex and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should NOT leave our registration/insurance cards in it, nor the remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology. 2..GPS: Someone had their car broken into while they were at a hockey game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the arena and specially allotted to hockey fans.. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the hockey game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen. 3.CELL PHONES: I never thought of this! This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says, "I received your text asking about our PIN number and I replied a little while ago." When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text "hubby" in the contact list and got hold of the PIN. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account. Moral of this story a. Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc. b. And, very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. c. Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet "family and friends" who text you. 4.PURSE IN THE GROCERY CART SCAM: A lady went grocery-shopping at a local mall and left her purse sitting in the child seat of the cart while she reached something off a shelf. Wait till you read the WHOLE story! Her wallet was stolen, and she reported it to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from the Mall Security to say that they had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by Mall Security that they had not called her. By the time she returned home again, her house had been broken into and burgled. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were Mall Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to burgle it. *PLEASE PASS THIS ON Even if this does not pertain to you, please let your family and friends know so they don't get caught in a scam.
