Americana Week: A Patriotic Alternative To Kwanzaa

As an American, I hereby offer the following observance, 'Americana Week, " as a patriotic alternative to Kwanzaa.

Starting Dec 26th-January 1st, 2012, I suggest using each to day to remember how we helped fellow Americans during these challenging times.

Recalling and sharing best practices from our common tradition is its goal.

Let's recap each year as a way to unite Americans, as opposed to Kwanzaa's separatism. I used to participate in Kwanzaa, but found its cumbersome ritual and focus to be socialism draped in east African lore.

Socialists have thoroughly infiltrated American Black culture to such an extent that I refer to it as a " Soviet client state " which ironically outlived the old Soviet Union.

Outcast group think is down loaded into young minds from every institution within our infected infrastructure. Once mainstream organizations like churches and the NAACP now merely offer less extreme socialism than bombastic militants.

Recognizing our heritage is fine- so long as we incorporate our American identity into the recognition. Promoting a " we're outcasts " mentality only creates more of what we don't need: criminals; con artists and otherwise responsible stakeholders who enable them.

Kwanzaa's founder, Maulana Karenga, is accused of torturing women; fostering violence against other nationalists and inventing this observance for less than noble reasons.

Its obsession with indoctrinating participants into a decidedly collectivist identity is at odds with their American one. This feature alone raised red flags in my mind for decades.

It overall lack of relevance in our daily lives was the other concern. As American citizens in the 21st Century, just how useful is seeing ourselves as outcasts in a hostile land?

That's why Americana Week crossed my mind.

American Blacks, like everyone else, should recount people; events and movements which helped America this year.

Our future rests upon how well unite as communities and countrymen to address challenges affecting all of us- regardless of ethnicity or creed.

That's why Americana Week is a patriotic alternative to Kwanzaa. Its focus isn't on creating outcasts like Karenga desired.

Americana Week seeks to share best practices from the past year in order to make the next year (s) better.

The best part is all Americans can share this week as the extended family we are!

I love the idea on its own merits, with no mind to Kwanzaa at all.

Obama Announces New Federal Golf Rules

December 26, 2012 by Dan Mitchell
I’ve never criticized President Obama for playing a lot of golf. As far as I’m concerned, the nation is in much better shape when politicians spend a lot of time goofing off.

But I’m more than happy to use golf as a humor prop to make a serious points about public policy.

Earlier this year, for instance, I shared this golfing cartoon to help emphasize that Obama has been a big spender.

Let’s build upon that cartoon with a bit of humor sent to me by a friend from the Caribbean.

Here’s some new rules for golf, based on Obama’s soak-the-rich/entrap-the-poor approach to fiscal policy.

===========================================================

President B.H.O. has recently appointed a Golf Czar.

Major rule changes in the game of golf will become effective January, 20 2013.

This is only a preview as the complete rule book (expect 2716 pages) is being rewritten as we speak.

Here are a few of the changes:

Golfers with handicaps:
- Below 10 will have their green fees increased by 35%.
- Between 11 and 18 will see no increase in green fees.
- Above 18 will get a $20 check each time they play.

The term “gimmie” will be changed to “entitlement” and will be used as follows:
- Handicaps below 10, no entitlements.
- Handicaps from 11 to 17, entitlements for putter length putts.
- Handicaps above 18, if your ball is on the green, no need to putt, just pick it up.

These entitlements are intended to bring about fairness and, most importantly, equality in scoring.

In addition, a Player will be limited to a maximum of one birdie or six pars in any given 18-hole round.

Any excess must be given to those fellow players who have not yet scored a birdie or par.

Only after all players have received a birdie or par from the player actually making the birdie or par, can that player begin to count his pars and birdies again.

The current USGA handicap system will be used for the above purposes, but the term “net score” will be available only for scoring those players with handicaps of 18 and above.

This is intended to “re-distribute” the success of winning by making sure that in all competitions every Player above an 18 handicap will post only “net score” against every other player’s “gross score”.

These new Rules are intended to CHANGE the game of golf.

Golf must be about Fairness.

It should have nothing to do with ability, hard work, practice, and responsibility.

This is the “Right thing to do.”

So, please remember; if you shot a round of golf under par, you didn’t shoot it yourself. Someone else built that course, and someone else cut the grass so that you could play on it. Someone else built the clubs and the cart.

You need to share with everyone and anyone who made you a successful golfer.

======================================================

The “Entitleist” photo is a great touch.

Though it’s very dark humor for someone like me who believes in self reliance and favors entitlement reform.

P.S. Have you ever wondered how America’s Declaration of Independence would look if our friends from the left had been in charge?

A Humorous Look at Obama’s Screwy Budget Math
May 31, 2012 by Dan Mitchell
I’ve been quite involved in the debate over which Presidents were big spenders.

I started with an analytical post that crunched the data from the Office of Management and Budget, and I showed that Obama was only a fiscal conservative if you ignored the budget impact of the TARP bailout.

I then augmented that analysis with a second post showing in more detail that Obama deserves a bad grade because of spending on social welfare programs.

Last but not least, my most recent post stated that Bush also was a big spender and I cited Jonah Goldberg’s excellent column suggesting that Romney should admit that Republicans bear some blame for the fiscal mess in Washington.

So we’ve been entirely too serious about this topic. Time for some cartoons! We’ll start with this gem from Eric Allie.

Now let’s look at a good one from Lisa Benson. The dirt being swept under the carpet is TARP, of course.

I think that’s the first cartoon I’ve used from Mr. Allie, but I have shared Ms. Benson’s work before. You can find some of my favorites here, here, here and here.

P.S. Getting back to the serious issue, much of the debate over Obama’s spending record revolves around TARP, but there’s also some discussion of how to divvy up blame for spending in Bush’s last fiscal year (FY2009, which began October 1, 2008). You can find some of my analysis on that issue here and here.

I wish I could draw. I would have Obama as the bratty niece in Finding Nemo holding the bag with the fish (the economy) and shaking it. Drops of water flying off (various and sundry economy killing ideas) caption: Why won’t you work? Or Open your eyes!

While Bush did expand some federal programs, those pretty much occurred when it appeared there was money available to make some positive change. Most of Bush’s ‘Big Spending’ came in the aftermath of 9-11 to get the economy back moving, creating and ramping up Homeland Security programs, the War on Terror (both Afghanistan and Iraq), and the recovery efforts of both hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The TARP program that came out of Bush’s time was created without either Bush’s nor the republicans input, and Bush was more or less misguided (as most were at that moment in time) into approving it because of the “Massive Economic Depression” we faced which it was supposed to alleviate. Yes, Bush can be blamed for his big spending… but at least he had some excuse.

A new video featuring the Birds-of-Paradise Project, with our thanks and best wishes for a happy new year

Thank You for Making Discovery Possible

For decades, we've crossed the globe to understand and protect birds and biodiversity. This video, highlights just one of the many research projects that you make possible. Watch now.

As we look back at 2012, all of our staff here at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology wish to thank you for your tremendous support--your participation in citizen-science projects; your generous contributions of photos, stories, and ideas; your generous gifts to help us improve the understanding and protection of birds and biodiversity.

Nearly 100 years ago, our founders recognized the value of exploring and sharing discoveries about the natural world. Thanks to you, that tradition continues today.

We hope you'll keep watching, listening, and exploring with us in 2013. Best wishes for a happy new year, filled with the joy of birds and the natural world.
