Top 5 Reasons Not to Use Missile Strikes in Syria

There are press reports that the White House is considering missile strikes on the Assad regime in Syria to punish it for the use of chemical weapons. That is a bad idea for five reasons.

1. The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine is not adequate justification for direct military intervention. This dangerous doctrine, promoted at the United Nations, undermines U.S. sovereignty by arguing for an obligation of nations to intervene. As Heritage’s legal expert on sovereignty matters, Steve Groves, explains:

a doctrine that compels the United States to act to prevent atrocities occurring in other countries would be risky and imprudent. U.S. independence—hard won by the Founders and successive generations of Americans—would be compromised if the United States consented to be legally bound by the R2P doctrine. The United States needs to preserve its national sovereignty by maintaining a monopoly on the decision to deploy diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, political coercion, and especially its military forces.

2. A vital U.S. interest is not at stake. The U.S. does have an interest in the resolution of the conflict, but military force should be reserved for areas where the U.S. has a compelling need to act in defense of its own interests. There are other and more prudent options for advancing U.S. interests to help resolve the conflict.

3. It would not be a wise use of military force. Military force should be used only if there is a clear, achievable, realistic purpose. Missile strikes are unlikely to deter the Assad regime and prevent further abuses. Rather, the U.S. risks escalating its involvement in the crisis.

4. Missile attacks would only make President Obama look weaker. Much like President Clinton’s ineffective cruise missile strikes on Osama bin Laden’s terrorist camps, strikes would only be seen as a sign that the U.S. is lacking a clear, decisive course of action. The Middle East would see this as another effort from the Obama Administration to look for an “easy button” and lead from behind rather than exercise real, constructive leadership.

5. It would distract from what the U.S. should be doing. Rather than attempting to intervene directly in the conflict, the U.S. should be working in a concerted manner with other countries in the region to hasten the end of the Assad regime and deal with the refugee crisis, the resurgence of al-Qaeda, and the destabilizing efforts of Iran and Hezbollah.

I disagree. I believe we should have used missile strikes early and often to disrupt government artillery strikes. We don't have to walk the ground to level the playing field. Missile strikes and no fly zones WERE effective in containing Sadaam Hussein in the late 90s. Sitting on the sideline watching anybody be massacred is not the moral high ground.

Our foreign policy is an utter disaster and I fear the Democrats will try to do something, it'll be the wrong thing, to make Obama look like he's the man in charge, willing to do what is right. But at the end of the day, our window to help shut about a year ago and once Obama drew the imaginary line in the sand, he backed himself, again, into a corner. We should be allying with Israel, we should have done this 5 years ago, insuring that our allies are safe and know we will help them no questions asked, but, again, we didn't and another mistake is to try and make Obama the Commander in Chief he isn't.

This could be the same kind of ruse for which Al-Quida and Hezabollah are famous for... Lets not start attacking another country until we have all the facts... What leader is stupid enough to use chemical weapons several days after he is warned not to.... just a wee bit to convenient....

Obama seems to feel like the United Nations is superior to our constitution. It is not and we should follow our own directive and not those put together by some friends and our enemies. THINK ABOUT IT?

Congratulations Scott. Thank you for taking the moral high ground.
It is interesting that there is no concern over the hundred thousand lives already lost in Syria. How many more lives will be taken by the weapons of mass destruction that remain. Perhaps we should see the suffering and death of those our children that have died.
It is sad that most comments above support the selfish concerns of unaffected individuals . The American Spirit is truly a thing of the past.

It's terrible what is happening there...and an absolute human rights catastrophe... yet it is primarily a civil war... it is not our place to pick winners and losers for other countries??? All we can rightly do is express our support for those we believe in ...and work to protect our interests in the region...

As with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, which brought us into WWII, the Syrian army and other Arab factions are looking to draw US into a war in Syria (neighbor to Iran); and with Egypt's near-civil war brewing, we would be foolish to be duped into yet another world war.

Well well well, it seems that a HUGE majority of the American People want the US to stay the hell OUT of other countries and let them fight their OWN wars. HOORAH!!! Here are protests against missile strikes or yet ANOTHER ' NATION MAKING " move on another country !!! Enough of OUR boys have died or been maimed for life, MOST of them if you tally in the mental problems these wars have cost. Let them fight to the death if they want , and be STANDING BUY to make sure they do not try to make it OUR death, or let them settle their own differences.

jay w..."Ditto" our transparent Presidential Administration has all too many credibility issues to-date. Furthermore, our intervention would fail to possess any achievements, except one, the Syrians (all of them)would hate the U.S. even more. We would most likely kill & injure many innocent people (those we hope to help) and piss off the ones that view we took the wrong side. Our intervention is a no win solution....period! Let us learn from Egypt, Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan....stay the hell out of "Nation Building". As a result, no "No Fly zones", cruise-missile and/or drone strikes. Let them work it out between themselves!!!!

The U.S. government should protect the U.S.
In what way is Assad a threat to the U.S.?
In what way will intervention help the U.S. economy improve?
How will intervention reduce unemployment in the U.S.?
U.S. intervention will only distract from the refusal of most Americans to buy-in to ACA and allow the present administration to continue its effort to ignore the Constitution and dictate the future.

Although I agree with Steve Groves regarding the R2P Doctrine, we (USA) must be prepared to deal with leaders of other countries who use chemical weapons to kill their own people. We should act immediatly with our allies in the world and with our best effort to first investigate and then respond.I'm sure we have the best intellegence on the ground or we should have. And if it's true and they have used chemical weapons then we should take immediate action to remove that leader. We do not want any more Adolf Hitlers. But we should act within the framework of the US Constitution. This is urgent!

American Spirit a thing of the past? In many Americans it is dead! Our country is in serious need of leadership and moral teaching here at home! Sure I feel horrible about people slaughtering there own over there, yes it effects me! But don't we do the same in different ways? When children have absolutely no moral conscious, respect or 'American Spirit' at a level where they believe it's ok to beat a man to death because they're bored.... I believe it's long past time to refocus on our own. WWll veteran Delbert Belton, a senior citizen, a man of honor, a man who fought bravely and made sacrifices for his country, fought for the freedom of future generations only to have his life brutally taken by the youth of this generation effects me! That effects me deeply and I never met the man. How's that for moral high ground? I'm all for helping others but something is seriously wrong here. Let's get our own house in order before running out to help everyone else..... Again! This country always seems to be the leader in helping other countries both financially & in sacrificing the lives of our young people as we sink further into debt and grief. where has this gotten us? Our first order of business should be to elect a real Commander in Chief! The current one is clueless about the people in his own back yard. Disgusted by the in-humane treatment of human to human on this planet but we can't save the world if we can't save our own family...

I think the Heritage author left out at least a sixth point. Russia has had a vested interest in Syria for decades. There are thousands of Russian citizens living in Syria now and there are Russian ships docked at a port there.

Vladimir Putin is an old Cold Warrior who never abandoned his 'apparatchik' KGB mentality. If Obama, Kerry, the Senate, Congress all agree on a military strike or if Israel over-reacts to Syria, that could reactivate the Kremlin's old anti-West paranoid mentality, something that could lead to a nuclear war, not just a regional one.

If that happens, that would be far worse than a chemical gas attack against Syrian civilians. Frankly I think most government "leaders" in America and in the world today at large are just a bunch of irrational, power mad freaks. Who says America must be the world's international cop? Reagan once said: "Governments start wars, not people." He was right.

Beam me up Scotty....

#6 There is no proof that Assad used chemical weapons. who would benefit from it's use? Muslims who are looking to the U.S. to knock out Assad so they can take over.
Assad would be foolish to use weapons like that, especially as it is not his last resort.. This is a set up by Muslims and Obama. Don't fall for it.

No airstrikes or military action of any kind without proper congressional approval. Bush got approval, so should Obama. This is not an immenent threat to the US.

Haven't we learned our lesson? Muslims don't want peace. Islam is a religion of war and dominance at any cost.

You want to interven somewhere for humand dignity, lets start with North Korea. It is a black eye on humanity and all civilized nations that we sit back and do nothing to help those folks.

Texas Girl with a Plan...wish the House & Senate had Same!

Wow, this girl has a great plan! Love the last thing she would do the best.

This was written by a 21 yr old female who gets it. It's her future she's worried about and this is how she feels about the social welfare big government state that she's being forced to live in! These solutions are just common sense in her opinion.

This was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco , TX

PUT ME IN CHARGE . . .

Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox
360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the "common good.."

Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin your "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago thattaking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND While you are on Gov't subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes, that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov't welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.

Now, if you are not afraid of political correctness - PLEASE PASS THIS ON.

Naughty But Funny: Are you with me, IRS?

At the end of the tax year, the IRS office sent an inspector to audit the books of a local hospital. While the IRS agent was checking the figures, he turned to the CFO of the hospital and said, "I notice you buy a lot of bandages. What do you do with the end of the roll when there's too little left to be of any use?"

"Good question," noted the CFO. "We save them up and send them back to the bandage company and every once in a while they send us a free roll."

"Oh," replied the auditor, somewhat disappointed that his unusual question had a practical answer.

But on he went, in his obnoxious way. "What about all these plaster purchases? What do you do with what's left over after setting a cast on a patient?"

"Ah, yes," replied the CFO, realizing that the inspector was trying to trap him with an unanswerable question. "We save it and send it back to the manufacturer and every so often they will send us a free bag of plaster." I see," replied the auditor, thinking hard about how he could fluster the know-it-all CFO.

"Well," he went on, "what do you do with all the remains from the circumcision surgeries?"

"Here, too, we do not waste," answered the CFO. "What we do is save all the little foreskins and send them to the IRS office, and about once a year they send us a complete prick."

There were 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black:

1. He called everyone brother

2. He liked Gospel

 3. He didn't get a fair trial

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish:

 1. He went into His Father's business

2. He lived at home until he was 33

3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his Mother

was sure He was God

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Italian:

 1. He talked with His hands

2. He had wine with His meals

3. He used olive oil

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was aCalifornian:

 1. He never cut His hair

2. He walked around barefoot all the time

3. He started a new religion

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was anAmerican Indian:

1. He was at peace with nature

2. He ate a lot of fish

3. He talked about the Great Spirit

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Irish:

1. He never got married..

2. He was always telling stories.

3. He loved green pastures.

But the most compelling evidence of all - 3 proofs that Jesus was a woman:

1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was virtually no food

2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it

3. And even when He was dead, He had to get up because

there was still work to do

Can I get an AMEN!!

A word from the principal architect responsible for the smoke n mirrors libtardian-demo-socialist currently destroying the USA! He's just a babbling idiot...she's the brain!

Hello, everyone --

President Obama was just two years old when Dr. King, along with hundreds of thousands of ordinary folks, inspired the country at the March on Washington. The President is a full generation removed from the heroes who marched across the bridge in Selma, who boycotted the buses in Montgomery, who integrated the lunch counters in Greensboro, but they inspired his commitment to public service.

And if his presidency is a symbol of the progress we've made as a nation, his speech yesterday -- a full half century after the March on Washington -- was an impassioned call to continue building on the work of the civil rights movement.

It was quite a moment. Take a minute to watch the video, then share it with your friends.

We too often forget that when the crowds converged on the National Mall 50 years ago, they were marching for jobs and freedom. The speakers talked about rolling back oppression, but they also demanded equal access to opportunity and a fair shot at economic success.

We have made great progress, but these goals remain just as relevant today as they were in 1963. Every American deserves to feel the pride of a hard-earned paycheck and the opportunity to achieve their dreams, regardless of who they are or where they are born.

As President Obama said, "The arc of the moral universe may bend toward justice, but it doesn't bend on its own. To secure the gains this country has made requires constant vigilance, not complacency."

Watch now:

LIFE... As I See It....

This is something we should all read.  Make sure you read to the end!!!!!!  Written by Regina Brett, 90 years old, of the Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio .... "To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.  It is the most requested column I've ever written.  My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short – enjoy it.
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick.  Your friends and family will.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument.  Stay true to yourself.
7. Cry with someone.  It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God.  He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first payline.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others.  You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye, but don't worry, God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath.  It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful.  Clutter weighs you down in many ways.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to be happy.  But it’s all up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets and wear the fancy lingerie.  Don't save it for a special occasion.  Today is special.
22. Over prepare and then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now.  Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything.  Give time time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously.  No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life.  Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative of dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day.  Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time.  Accept what you already have, not what you need.
42. The best is yet to come...
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."
Its estimated 93% won't share this.  I'm in the 7%.
Friends are the family that we choose.

SAD NEWS FOR SKIER LINDSEY VONN

This past winter, Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn tore the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in her right knee and fractured her tibia during a harrowing ski accident in Schlamding, Austria.

Vonn was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Schladming.

Concerned that she wouldnbt be ready for the 2014 Winter Olympics, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced today that her spot on the U.S. Olympic Team would be filled by Barack Obama.

U.S. Olympic officials said Obama deserved the spot on the team because no one has ever taken a country downhill faster than he has.

Getting Old?

I very quietly confided to my best friend that I was having an affair.

She turned to me and asked, 'Are you having it catered'?

And that, my friend, is the definition of 'OLD'!

~ ~ ~

Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, 'How old was your husband?'

'98,' she replied: 'Two years older than me'

'So you're 96,' the undertaker commented.

She responded, 'Hardly worth going home, is it?'

~ ~ ~

Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman:

'And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?' the reporter asked.

She simply replied, 'No peer pressure.'

~ ~ ~

I've sure gotten old!

I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes

I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that

make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation;

hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends.

But, thank God, I still have my Florida driver's license.

~ ~ ~

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising.

I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour..

But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

~ ~ ~

An elderly woman decided to prepare her will and told her preacher she had two final requests.

First, she wanted to be cremated, and second, she wanted her ashes scattered over Wal-Mart.

'Wal-Mart?' the preacher exclaimed. 'Why Wal-Mart?'

'Then I'll be sure my daughters visit me twice a week.'

~ ~ ~

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

~ ~ ~

Know how to prevent sagging?

Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.

~ ~ ~

It's scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker.

~ ~ ~

These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, 'For fast relief.'

~ ~ ~

THE SENILITY PRAYER:

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,

the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

~ ~ ~

Now, I think you're supposed to share this with 5 or 6, maybe 10 others.

Oh heck, give it to a bunch of your friends if you can remember who they are!

~ ~ ~

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

I don't want to brag or make anyone jealous or anything,

but I can still fit into the earrings I wore in high school.
