Monthly Memo: "The Arctic: A New Geopolitical Pivot?"

As it warms up, the Arctic, which contains vast amounts of natural resources, has the potential to become the new geopolitical pivot of the 21st century.

Increased political attention from both Arctic and non-Arctic countries has convinced many that the region is turning into an area where the interests of great nations could spill over into a new military conflict.

Read this RD Monthly to learn whether the militarization of this region is a myth or reality and whether non-Arctic states, such as China, bring new challenges or opportunities.

The author is Andrei Zagorski, the head of the Department for Arms Control and Conflict Resolution at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
